Law Dictionary

 

The use of Dictionary in the understanding of legal words and phrases is a very commonly practiced behaviour. The dictionaries i.e. Judicial and Legislative as used in this website is the integral part of this site. In this dictionaries we have basically included those terms and phrases which were defined, interpreted or enacted in Bangladeshi laws.

The Courts of Law are there in democratic countries to find out the true intention of the legislature and the meaning of the statutes. In case of Bangladesh, pre-dominantly it is the House of Nation i.e. Jatya Shangshad which enacts primary legislations. Besides, the President of Bangladesh and some other authorities have the law making power by way of Ordinance and Subordinate and delegated legislation. In this section, we have tried to include some words of Bangladeshi Laws which were defined or interpreted by the Supreme Court of Bangladesh while deciding a case before them.

The Parliament of Bangladesh is the supreme law making authority and it has either adopted or enacted as many as 956 Acts, Ordinances and Orders till January, 2007 and in these laws hundreds of words have been defined or interpreted or explained  to give effect to the true meaning of the laws. In this dictionary, we have included basically the terms which are defined in English [from 1987, the laws of Bangladesh have been being enacted in Bengali with some exception] and gradually we shall include all the terms defined or interpreted or explained in the laws of the land.
